JUDO’S MORAL CODE

Judo is considered to be a “budo” or a martial way which indicates that it a way of life beyond a mere set of techniques. Dr. Jigoro Kano, the founder of judo set a strict moral code when he established judo which was to be infused throughout the instruction. We view this standard of behavior to be a critical component of our training both on and off the mat. On the mat, it demands that we show great respect for our training partners and we are there to protect each other and allow everyone to learn. Off the mat, it demands that we treat all persons with dignity and respect while not shying away from our responsibilities as good citizens. The code has eight components:

  • Courtesy

  • Courage

  • Friendship

  • Honesty

  • Honor

  • Modesty

  • Respect

  • Self-Control
